Matthew and the Atlas & Communion at Do You DIY?

The eponymous Matthew is Matthew Hegarty and The Atlas is his wonderful band. They play a bruised, soulful and muscular brand of modern folk music.
Imagine Joe Cocker singing Bon Iver in a pair of steel toe-capped boots after working in a field all day and you’re some of the way there. His voice sounds a hundred years old, with all the heartache and weariness that implies, but wrapped around these melodies its rough edges take on a real tenderness – like a lumberjack picking roses.
Last winter, in a snowy North London, they recorded the beautiful and widely praised ‘To the North’ EP. Earlier this year they started to play it live – and are finding it pretty hard to stop.
Communion was born in the summer of 2006 at Notting Hill Arts Club. Founded by Ben Lovett (Mumford and Sons), Kevin Jones (Cherbourg) and producer Ian Grimble, it grew into a community of musicians, industry and fans alike, and provided a platform for the newest bands on London’s circuit. The night has seen the likes of Noah and the Whale, Laura Marling, Mumford and Sons, JJ Pistolet and Peggy Sue grace the stage and has become closely associated with the nu-folk movement in the capital. As well as this, it helped spawn the careers of artists such as Esser, The Holloways and Example, in keeping with the eclectic ethos that Communion has come to stand for. Communion has also just launched itself an independent record label with Matthew and The Atlas as it’s first release.

Thomas Tantrum & Sotones for Do You DIY?
Thursday, 20 May 2010
Thomas Tantrum consists of Megan Thomas (lead vocals, guitar), Dave Wade Brown (drums, vocals), David Miatt (guitars, vocals), and Jim Shivers (bass, vocals).
Since the release of their critically acclaimed self titled album released in 2008 Thomas Tantrum have been a busy old bunch. With the release of strong singles such as ‘Work it’ and ‘Shake it, Shake’ gaining them a cult fan base with even the likes of ‘Lilly Allen’ amongst fans.
In 2009 change was on the cards, as the band introduced Dave Wade Brown as new drummer. This saw them work on a more mature sound, while the inspirational front woman Megan Thomas began to experiment with vocals, the rest of the band began introducing new sounds. Following touring with bands such ‘Glasvegas’ and ‘Futureheads’ important time was taken out, to retreat to the studio while writing and recording new material.
Thomas Tantrum are now back with the brilliant new track ‘The Last Kiss’. It’s four minutes of breezy power pop will be stuck in your head, and having recently toured with ‘Band of Skulls’ and a new album on the cards this is going to be a busy summer for them!

Sotones began as a club night which brothers Rob and Dave Wade-Brown (Thomas Trantrum) promoted in Southampton and soon blossomed into a label. It was founded as a co-operative. This means that the artists are also members, who own the label entirely together.
Since its’ inception, Sotones has come leaps and bounds with new signings since 2007, a distribution deal with Believe and their first 12″ and 7″ releases as well as founding a publishing arm. A highlight of summer 2009 (alongside festival spots for various Sotones artists at Glastonbury, SGP, Bestival and Burningman among others) was the Bike Tour, where Sotones’ Lonely Joe Parker played twelve dates in fourteen days, traveling between shows by bicycle and co-headlining with other Sotones artists including Thoms Tantrums very own guitarist David Miatt (Jackie Paper) along the way.
The label has released over 25 records and the label’s output has received local and national radio play on BBC stations including BBC Radio 1, 6Music and Radio 2 as well as Xfm and Resonance FM.
